Growing up, he was exposed to and influenced by two very different styles of music: music (,,,,, Changui and Son) by greats such as, and, including the works of and. Originally a, he discovered his talent for singing during an audition for an band, The Halos, that rehearsed across the street from where he lived. Sanchez became the lead vocalist of the group. HE would later go on to teach himself the,, and before finally deciding to pursue conga-playing in. Career [ ] In 1975, Sanchez's idol,, invited him to perform a set with his band. Seeing the young man's talent, Tjader hired Sanchez for a week before officially making him a full member of the ensemble.

Sanchez played a crucial role as conguero for several years until Tjader's death in 1982. Before Poncho was even in high school, he was working as a singer, doing weddings and parties with soul and R&B bands. The funky rhythms and dance steps of California in the 1960s are the core of the music he's making today: the boogaloo, the shing-a-ling and especially the funky cha-cha. Before every set, Poncho tapes his fingers, seats himself at his drums and produces percussive, melodic rolls and figures calibrated to near-perfection. Special guest Fred Wesley on trombone was one of the renowned JB Horns, having spent years with James Brown and more with Parliament/Funkadelic.
